J.L. Johnson Upholstery

We are a locally-owned, full-service upholstery shop, specializing in classic automotive interior restoration.  We are committed to reviving the historical integrity of each vehicle while bringing to life the unique vision of our customers.

J.L. Johnson Upholstery spans over 16 years of experience.  In 1999, Jay Johnson began his upholstery apprenticeship at The Emporium of St. Ignace, Michigan.  While learning the craft, Jay upholstered fine furniture for the area's residents and establishments, including hotels on Mackinac Island.

 

In 2001, while working on Mackinac, he met his future wife, Anne, a college student from Canton, Ohio, who was employed on the island for the summer.

 

In 2003, Jay moved to Canton, where he and Anne were married. While supporting his family as a small engine mechanic, Jay realized he missed the art of upholstering.  When a friend asked him to upholster a red ottoman for a church Christmas production, Jay rekindled his passion for the craft, bought an industrial sewing machine, and J.L. Johnson Upholstery was born.

 

Soon, word of Jay's quality craftsmanship began to spread, and what began as a paying hobby developed into a second career. Demand for Jay's upholstery skills continued to grow over the years.  Finally, after much prayer and consideration, the decision was made to plunge full-time into the trade.

 

Today, J.L. Johnson Upholstery is a thriving enterprise in Hartville, Ohio.  Jay is thrilled to merge his craft with his love of classic cars as he continues perfecting the art of automotive interior restoration.  He is honored to model honest, hard work for his three young sons, and he is thankful to God for blessing him with the opportunity to fulfill his dream while supporting his family.
